Professional Paralysis

“May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us – yes, establish the work of our hands.”  Psalm 90:17

“Going to work isn't like it used to be,” he laments peering into the horizon, fishing pole in hand.

“What gives?” asks his buddy, baiting his hook.

“I've just got this gnawing feeling that I should be doing something else.  But what?” he ponders, casting his line.  “I'm afraid to leave what I already have.”

Professional paralysis is an uncomfortable feeling.  Hanging on to a job we know isn't right for us, but afraid to do something else.  There are tons of reasons to stay – some even legitimate.  We feel stuck.  So we plod along, going through the motions.  But something is lacking.  Is this all there is?

Perhaps you chose your occupation before you were aware of God's plan for you.  Or maybe he gave you your current job only for a season.  All you know is that you feel unsettled.  Filled with a restless yearning.  Could God be ringing your doorbell?

OK – you know he's at the door.  But your fears keep you mired in indecision.  Moving on is never easy.  In fact, there can be real personal and financial challenges to following God's leading.

But let's face reality.  If God isn't selecting our vocation, the workplace frustration will continue.  Here's the divine plan.  The Lord picks the job.  We do it.  He blesses it.  It's that simple.  Unless God prospers our work, we can't succeed on our own.  Setting our own agenda is useless.

Are you working where God has called you?  If not, explore these paths:

  • Prayerfully evaluate your unrest.  Where is God leading you?

  • Face your fears.  Be strong and courageous.

  • Assemble your team.  Call in family, friends, and Jesus, your life coach.

In Christ we're free to enjoy the work he has given us.  Following his career plan is an exciting adventure.  Are you living life "flat-footed" or flowing in God's will?  Put some spring in your step and pursue God’s vision.
